Reference & Bibliographic Instruction Policies

The major emphasis in assistance of patrons is instructional. However, librarians will not only assist the patron in the use of research tools and other resources but will at times retrieve information for the patron. Librarians use their own judgment in offering the type of assistance needed by library users. Patrons are served according to their information needs rather than their status within the University. Although library access and reference service will be provided for the community at large, priority will be given to members of the Carson-Newman University community if necessary. Reference questions made in person have priority over those received by telephone, electronic transmission, or mail.

Telephone or E-mail Reference

Telephone and e-mail reference assistance is limited primarily to ready reference type questions. Patrons are encouraged to come to the library and work with a librarian if they have extensive or in depth reference questions.

Services for the Disabled

Librarians will make special provisions which permit the user to examine sources, complete assignments, and conduct research. Barriers are eliminated to the fullest extent possible within the present facilities.

Tours and Instruction

Orientation tours and bibliographic instruction classes are primarily the responsibility of the Reference Librarian, although the other librarians may be called upon to conduct tours and classes occasionally. Tours and classes are given at all levels, from freshmen through graduate, upon request by a member of the faculty. The instruction typically includes brief subject bibliographies, a discussion of the research process, and discussion, demonstration, and hands-on practice of searching the online catalog and electronic databases. Tutorials on various electronic indexes and guides to reference holdings in various disciplines are also available from the library's web site.
