MISSION STATEMENT
The program is designed to foster the total development of the child's physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual well-being. These areas of development are interrelated, and the laboratory is equipped and operated to encourage growth in each of these areas. The Carson-Newman Child Development Laboratory (CDL) was developed as a training facility for teachers, as a research laboratory, and as a service to the community.
CDL Highlights:
- Serves as a teacher training facility for Child and Family Studies majors
- Provides a State of Tennessee Three-Star Early Childhood program for 4 and 5-year old children from the surrounding communities during the morning.
- Curriculum is based on Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) philosophy
- A Gold Sneaker certified center

Carson-Newman’s President Fowler and First Lady (seated with the children) visited the Child Development Laboratory for the first time to read Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss. They presented each child with a copy that included an encouraging personal note.
